Tasmania

A lot of Australians like to tease Tasmanian for being remote, cold, full of sheep-shaggers, and in general inferior to the mainland. But planning a trip to Tasmania turned out to be one of the best decisions I made while Down Under, and what started as a relatively spontaneous trip turned into an incredible three day adventure. In a lot of ways, Tasmania was probably the place I felt most at home in Australia: it was friendly, small, comfortable, and even reminded me in many ways of either a small rural community back home or a childhood vacation in Maine. For planning the entire trip on a whim and going for the first time all by myself, it was probably my favorite trip that I took in Australia.

The Best Of Tasmania-

Hobart

This quaint city is full of beautiful historic buildings, thriving markets and shopping centers, and beauty at every turn. Whether exploring the harborside wharfs, the rolling residential hills, or cityside shops, Hobart is everything calm, cozy, and comfortable.

On the Water

Sail out from the River Derwent and view gorgeous landmarks from Mt Wellington to Iron Pot Lighthouse.

Admire the gorgeous boats, bold rockfaces, friendly seals, and breathtaking sunset.

Food & Drink

Salamanca Place is the place to be, with great food and drink a plenty. There's a variety of options, but for me, little beats a nice margherita pizza and wine.

Outside the city, head to The Richmond Bakery for a variety of delicious treats

Nature

Standing at the top of Mt Wellington makes you feel like you're in Middle Earth, while the sight of rugged coastlines awes you with every crash of the waves. In terms of wildlife, Tasmania has a variety of incredible creatures, from gorgeous eagles, playful seals, and the iconic Tasmanian Devil.

Memories

01.

Strolling the Streets of Hobart

The petite streets of Hobart are easy to navigate, but even easier to get lost in. Hit up tons of food and shopping at Elizabeth Street Mall, or make your way to Salamanca Place by night for a nice pizza and some wine by the fire. Of course, even without a destination, you can meander the calm streets and admire all the gorgeous buildings and gardens and consider it a perfect evening. With so many little and hidden gems from the hills to the docks, simply leisurely strolling through the streets could be a perfect way to spend an evening or night.

Exploring the Countryside

If you thought the city was small, head out into the country and you'll notice the town populations drops into the hundreds range. Miniscule towns such as Richmond more than make up for their size with impressive wine and bakeries that make your mouth water, while the rural sounds of ducks and cows make you feel at home. Beyond the town, there's plenty of enchanting views to behold: serene farms, the humbling Port Arthur, and Eaglehawk Neck at dusk a sight leaving you truly gobsmacked.

Sailing the Tasman Sea

Okay, I'm slightly biased because the captain let me drive the boat (I wasn't allowed to drive a car- but no one said anything about boats). But a day out on the seas is as perfect as they come when you've got a gorgeous harbour, stunning cliff faces, and impressive views no matter which way you look. You might watch lazy seals sleeping on the rocks, admire old lighthouses, listen to the calls of sea eagles, all from the soothing rocking of a boat upon the waves (did I mention I drove it???).
